December/January Recap
In the months of December and January, we were hard at work in our third grade classroom. We learned a lot of new things and reviewed and strengthened some known skills. In math, we focused on early concepts on multiplication and division. In reading, we learned how to find the main idea and supporting details of a nonfiction text. In writing, we have been working on our opinion pieces. We started a unit on land forms and bodies of water in social studies and on the water cycles in science. During these months, we also had our second cycle of reading, writing, and math assessments.
General Information
The month of February will be a short but busy month. We have some exciting new academic concepts that we will be getting into and will also have a couple of fun projects. Homework will continue this month with a new homework menu. The kids will also still be expected to read for 20 minutes each night. See the homework center for more information.
NH-SAS Practice
This month, the kids will also have an opportunity to practice using the NH-SAS testing portal. This will be the same portal that we will use this spring when we take the standardized test. Mrs. FItzgerald will be teaching the kids how to log in, navigate the portal, and use the various tools available to them to aid in answering the questions. They will also have an opportunity to see the types of questions that will be given on the real test.
February Curriculum
Reading: This month in reading, we will be focusing on finding the main idea and supporting details of nonfiction texts as well as the point of view of fiction texts. We will also continue to practice summarizing texts and answering literal and abstract comprehension questions.
Writing: We will be continuing our opinion writing unit this month. The kids are learning how to write strong opinion statements and introduction paragraphs that are supported by reasons and examples. They are also learning how to write a solid concluding paragraph. At the end of this unit, the students will take home their published pieces.
Grammar: This month, we are focusing on contractions and homophones.
Spelling:/Vocabulary: Our spelling test will be happening on February 1st. We will then continue on to a vocbulary unit in our Wordly Wise program.
Math: In math this month, we will be starting a short unit on geometry in which we will be learning about quadrilaterals and angles.
Science: In science, we will be continuing out unit on the water cycle. The kids will design and conduct experiments on various hypotheses that they will make during this unit.
Social Studies: This month, we will be continuing our unit on land forms and bodies of water. At the end of this unit, the kids are going to be creating salt maps to show their understanding of the concepts presented in this unit. They will choose three land forms and two bodies of water that would be found together in nature. They will then mold and paint their maps using salt dough and label them with the appropriate names.
Microsociety: This month, students have paid their first tax bills! I am proud of everyone for being responsible and paying their taxes on time!
