October Recap
October has been a busy month in third grade. Last month, we started to delve deeper into academic concepts and spent time reviewing our classroom rules and expectations. We learned about rounding, place value, and addition and subtraction with regrouping in math. In reading, we learned all about how to answer different types of questions while citing text evidence. During writing, we learned about correct paragraph format and began our unit on personal narratives. In science, we focused on the concept of buoyancy and in social studies, we learned about the branches of government and concepts in economics. Also, last month, the students wrote their resumes and participated in the job fair. All third grade students are now employed!

The month of November will be a short but busy month. We have some exciting new academic concepts that we will be getting into and will also have a couple of fun projects. Homework will continue this month with a new homework menu. The kids will also still be expected to read for 20 minutes each night. See the homework center for more information. Parent conferences are taking place on Tuesday, November 6th. I am looking forward to meeting with all of you to share with you the wonderful things that your children have been doing in class!
November Curriculum
Reading: This month in reading, we will be focusing on abstract comprehension skills. These are the kinds of skills that require deeper, more reflective thinking. We will be specifically covering the concept of inferring and will be participating in character studies in reading groups.
Writing: Last month, we began our first unit of study on Personal Narratives. These are narrative nonfiction pieces that reflect a real event from the life of the author. We will continue to learn new skills to strengthen these pieces such as constructing a strong lead, incorporating dialogue, and using the trait of voice to add expression to our pieces.
Grammar: This month, we are focusing on concrete vs abstract nouns and will be reviewing possessive nouns.
Spelling:/Vocabulary: The month of November will focus on spelling words with long vowel patterns. Our vocabulary study will also continue with a new list this month.
Math: In math, we will be reviewing how to regroup in addition and subtraction of three and four digit numbers. We are working specifically in using careful computation by paying attention to the sign and remembering to regroup when "there is more on the floor." Later this month, we will begin our unit on multiplication basics. The kids will be learning the fundamentals of multiplication by building arrays, understanding the parts of a multiplication equation, and understanding that multiplication can also be expressed as a repeated addition equation.
Science: In science, we will be wrapping up our unit on buoyancy. Later this month, we will begin an earth science unit on weather.
Social Studies: This month, we will be starting a unit on Native American culture. We will be discussing cultural elements such as language, traditions, clothing, and family roles. Later in the month, we will be discussing the specific traditions and beliefs Native Americans from four regions of the United States.
Microsociety: This month, students will be reporting to work! Four times per week, during our micro block, the kids will be leaving our classroom and going to the rooms where their ventures/agencies operate from. Marketplace will open in December. Until that time, the kids will be participating in unpaid training. Once marketplace opens and is in full swing, the kids will be starting to earn their own money, get to go shopping in the marketplace, and will be able to access their bank accounts. The kids also know that once marketplace begins, the peacekeepers will be starting to patrol our hallways so they will need to be sure that they understand our Micro City Laws to avoid being ticketed! It is going to be a fun month for Micro!!
Thank you for reading! As always, if you have questions or concerns throughout the month, please feel free to email me at [email protected]
