Third Grade LearningIn third grade, we shift from "learning to read" to "reading to learn." While we will still be strengthening decoding skills and fluency, there will be a greater emphasis placed on deepening comprehension. Elements of ReadingDecoding is the ability to figure out unknown words and segment individual sound patterns in a word.
Fluency is referred to as the bridge between decoding and comprehension. Fluency is the ability to read smoothly, accurately and with appropriate inflection. Comprehension is the ability to think, speak, and write clearly and accurately about various fiction/nonfiction text elements. |
ProceduresThe Readers Workshop format allows for students to learn a grade level skill and then immediately be able to practice that skill using books that they choose for themselves. For more information on procedures, click the link below. |
