Readers Workshop Procedures
Mini Lesson
This is where a majority of the explicit instruction will happen. Students will learn a new decoding, fluency, or comprehension skill/concept as a whole group. We will use mentor texts, passages, videos, and other tools to help develop a basic understanding of the daily skill or concept. These mini lessons last between 10 and 20 minutes.

Independent/Guided Reading
This is the time when students will be able to apply the skills learned in mini lessons to their own reading. Each day, students will be given a task that relates to the mini lesson itself and will be reading books that they choose from their individual book bins. We will learn at the beginning of the year how to choose appropriate books. During this time, students will also be meeting with me in small groups for extra practice with previously taught skills or to deepen understanding of the skill of the day. Students will also be responding to text, using the reading apps on our tablets, and engaging in book chats with their peers. This portion of our reading block takes between 30-45 minutes.

Wrap UpDuring this time, we will meet back up as a class to reflect on our understanding of the new skills and share accomplishments from the day.
