General Information
Wow!! This year has flown by! We are in our final full month of third grade. I am so proud of how much everyone has learned this year and how far we have come as a class since the first day of school. The month of May is going to be segmented into two parts. The first two weeks of May is going to involve reviewing for the NH-SAS testing which is coming up in the second and third weeks in May. The second part of the month is going to involve some learning that will help better prepare kiddos for fourth grade. The month of May is also going to be a project heavy month now that we have made it through a majority of our curriculum. We will also be finishing up some end of year testing this month.
NH-SAS Testing
The NH SAS testing will take place on May 9th, May 13th, and May 14th with make up days on May 16th and May 17th. It is very, very important that your child be in attendance and on time on these days (unless they are ill). It is also very important to ensure that your child has a good night’s sleep the night before and a healthy breakfast in the morning. Kids can also have a water bottle with them at all times. In class, we have been talking all year about the importance of reading directions thoroughly and taking our time on ALL assignments. It is especially important that this happens on the NH-SAS as well. There are many questions that have multiple parts and will require close reading. While we have talked about this in class and practiced using some test taking strategies, it will be beneficial to chat with your kiddos about this at home as well. Being that this is the first time the kids have taken a standardized test, we want the testing experience to be as stress-free as possible. However, it is important for the kids to know how much taking their time and doing their best work matters on a test like this one. We have talked specifically about using all of the time given on each day and to look over their work multiple times before submitting. Once submitted, students are unable to go back and make corrections or additions. I know that everyone is going to put their best foot forward and do an amazing job! No matter what happens, I am proud and each and every one of my third grade friends for trying their best. Each day, the kids will have a little treat from me at the end of their testing day and we will have a whole school celebration once all grades have finished their testing as well!

Field Trip
Our field trip to go see School House Rock at the Palace Theater was rescheduled back in November due to inclement weather. I am happy to say that this field trip is still on! We will be heading to Manchester to see the show on Wednesday, May 15th along with Ms. Froleiks and her second graders. At this point, all third graders have paid and are all set to go! Our chaperone for this field trip will be Michaelene Koskela. If you have any questions about this, please feel free to reach out. :)
May Curriculum
Reading: This month in reading, we will be continue to focus on figurative language and using context clues to figure out unknown vocabulary words in more complex texts.
Writing: This month, we will be starting another informational report. This time, we will be focusing on biographies. The kids will each choose a well-known person to research and write about. At the end of this unit, the kids will create a miniature statue (a bio bottle) on their person and will present their findings at our Expo presentation on June 7th!
Grammar: This month, we are going to be focusing prefixes and suffixes and understanding the meaning of each one.
Spelling:/Vocabulary: At the start of the month, we will be focusing mainly on vocabulary. We will start spelling lists again once testing is over.
Math: In math this month, we will be continuing our unit on line plots and measurement and will be doing a lot of review on the math skills we have learned this year in preparation for the NH-SAS math test on May 9th.
Science: In science, we will be finishing our unit on the six main animal groupings: mammals, birds, invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, and fish. The kids will be breaking into small groups to create a poster on a different animal group to present to the class.
Thank you for reading! As always, if you have questions or concerns throughout the month, please feel free to email me at [email protected]
